Using Accent Lighting on Your Deck

August 30, 2010 by GuestPoster · Leave a Comment

If you have a deck and really want to make it live up to its potential, you need to install accent lighting.  It will make your deck look much more attractive, allow you to use it longer, and can even help to prevent unwanted accidents.  You have numerous different choices for fixtures to install and you can create any number of different vibes or looks as well so get started today by using some of the tips in this article.

With accent lighting, you will be using low level lighting that will provide enough light so that people can see what they are doing but not as much as a full powered flood light or other fixtures many people use on their decks.  Because of this, the light fixtures that you use are usually small and blend in with their surroundings because the focus should be on the light itself instead of the light fixture.

The lights should also be placed as close to the ground as possible.  This does several things.  First, it will keep the light where you want to have it and not risk over lighting your deck.  Second, and perhaps more importantly, it will prevent the lights from shining into anyone’s eyes.

For this type of lighting, solar deck lights are many times your best option.  These lights will speed up the installation process because you won’t have to run any wires under or around your deck.  The lights come in many different sizes, shapes, and styles as well so you will be able to choose the ones that you want for your deck.

Of course, the downside to using solar lights is that you need to place them in sunny areas if you want them to perform at their best.  However, if your deck is in the shade most of the day, never fear.  There are many models of solar lights that you can effectively use as accent lighting that actually have their solar panels detached from the lights, allowing you to place the solar panel up to 40 feet away from the lights in a much sunnier area.

Drivers will find it easier to safely maneuver cars along your driveway.

Lighting fixtures on driveways became more popular to homeowners as they discovered that it can be installed in no time. Models which are cost-effective are available. The sunlight is gathered and converted into energy. The people who have solar powered lights don’t need to switch them on in the evening because of the sensor which can automatically turn it on.

Solar powered lights are already prevalent in a lot of driveways. The easiest to setup are the ground lights since you just have to simply stick them by hand into your yard’s ground. Pool Heaters Allow You to Swim Longer

June 7, 2010 by GuestPoster · Leave a Comment

As a pool owner, you probably strive to get the most use out of your pool. You are excited when Memorial Day comes to kick off the summer, and upset when Labor Day arrives marking the end of the season. If you wish you could have another few months to enjoy your pool, you may want to consider installing a pool heater. Pool heaters give you the chance to double your swim season by keeping the water temperature comfortable and consistent.

Pool heaters are designed with one purpose in mind: to keep your pool at a comfortable temperature. While many people like bath-like water temperatures near 85 degrees, most experts recommend a water temperature of approximately 78 degrees for long-term swimming comfort. Pool thermometers will help you regulate the accuracy of your pool heater.

While some may argue that the sun itself can heat your pool and that a heater is a waste of money, most don’t realize how much more use you can get out of your pool when you have the ability to control the water’s temperature. Pool owners in Northern climates can expand their swimming season up to twice as long and those living in the southern regions can see their season length triple.

If you decide that a pool heater is right for you, consider using a pool heater in conjunction with a pool cover. This is an especially good idea for those with larger pools as good insulating pool covers can reduce heat loss by up to fifty percent – saving you a considerable amount of money.

There are several different types of pool heaters to consider. You can choose from gas heaters, oil heaters, electric heaters, and solar powered heaters. Gas heaters are often considered the most common and most popular, while solar heaters are considered the most cost efficient and earth-friendly. Oil heaters are popular where natural gas is not readily available. Electric powered heaters don’t need oil or natural gas, but are more expensive to buy and to operate.

Accessorize the Garden With Pots and Benches

February 23, 2010 by GuestPoster · Leave a Comment

There are many ways to brighten up the look of your garden.  From bright and colorful flowers to interesting bushes, the possibilities for color and texture are almost endless.  But in addition to the natural elements of the garden, there are many other accessories that can be used to also add interest to the space.  One way to add a bit of flair to your backyard is to strategically place decorative garden pots and planters of varying colors and sizes around the yard.

While it is easy to just plant flowers in flower beds, using a variety of different types of pots allows you to add other design and texture elements from the materials of the pots themselves into the décor.  Planting flowers in pots also provides versatility, allowing you to place bursts of color in places you may not normally have a chance to do so – such as on the patio, by the back door, along the edge of the pool or in almost any spot you wish.  These unexpected dashes of color make a big statement in the look of your outdoor space, adding interest, color and excitement.

Another way to accessorize your garden area and make it one that is inviting and comfortable is by placing a variety of seating elements throughout the space.  You can add a picnic bench with or without a table to provide  a quiet place to sit or dine, and can add other types of seating as well, such as chairs to lounge in, benches to read on, recliners or rockers to relax in, and more.  These seating elements add visual interest but also serve a functional purpose as well, providing ample space for seating guests, feeding the family outdoors, or simply relaxing and enjoying the flowers, the birds, or a bit of afternoon sun.

Gutter Cleaning Methods

February 15, 2010 by GuestPoster · Leave a Comment

When it comes time to clean your gutters, there are several different gutter cleaning methods that you can use to get the job done. Some are more labor intensive than others are, but any one of them can work depending on how clean your gutters are. Probably the easiest method is to put a hose or a power washer nozzle at one end and let the high pressure water carry any debris out an down the downspouts. You can then pick up the debris on the ground and put it in garbage bags. This method works well if upon gutter inspection you see that the gutters are not too dirty or not completely blocked. If there is too much debris, the water could just spray the debris out over the sides of the gutters and make a big mess down the sides of your house. However, if there is just a little bit of dirt and debris in the bottom of the gutters, this method could work well.

Another method is to climb up on a ladder and scoop out the debris by hand. Make sure that you wear a pair of gloves because there could be molds in the debris and mold can make you sick. Using your hands can be slow going because you can only hold so much at a time. An alternative is to use some of the gutter cleaning tools that are available. For example, there are products called gutter scoops. These scoops are cylindrical with the top cut off so that you have a bottom and two curved sides to use as a scoop. When purchasing your gutter scoop make sure that it is small enough to fit inside your gutters, but large enough to hold lots of debris at a time.

Another thing that makes gutter cleaning move slowly is the fact that you need to keep getting off the ladder and moving it every few feet. One method you can use to speed things up is use scaffolding.
