Pet Liability Insurance not a Liability to Homeowners

When you have pets, especially if you have dogs, the chances are they probably tear up the furniture or other precious items in your home, which is one of the reasons why you should consider purchasing pet liability insurance. Many carriers of homeowner’s insurance started including amendments for the homeowner’s pets, especially where dogs are concerned.

For example, when a dog gets loose in the neighborhood, he might scratch or bite someone because he is scared or someone provoked him. The people who were hurt could come back and sue you. Normally, you would be taken to court and if found liable, you would be ordered pay to the victim a sum of money for the medical expenses and other damages were deemed necessary. Sometimes this even included punitive or lost wages damages, which can ultimately add up to a large sum of money.

However, if you had paid for the pet liability insurance, this would cover some of the medical bills or other damages accrued by the victim. It is not a nice thing to think about, but these kinds of accidents happen every day. These days, liability insurance for pets is written right into the homeowner’s insurance to make the premiums a bit more bearable to pay.

Why not do this when the homeowner is already paying a premium, as it would add on only from five to $25 a month on top of the already low cost premium most cases. It is certainly not too much to pay when you consider the alternative if an accident were to take place.

The problem is not all insurance carriers offer this type of coverage. If this is the case with your carrier, you may want to consider switching to one who does. Alternatively, you could try to get your carrier to make an exception, although this is exceedingly rare I most cases. If you do purchase the liability insurance for pets, knowing your home and your pets are protected from any possible accident is worth any cost to insure them either way.
