Small Upgrades To Your Doors Make A Big Difference

February 21, 2010 by GuestPoster

Improving a home’s doors is something that will usually go overlooked when figuring out what interior design project is next in a home.  This is unfortunate because there are some simple upgrades that can be done by anyone with simple tools that make a huge impact in the home’s appearance.  In this post I want to share some different DIY projects that you can do to improve your home’s doors.

The most common (yet still rare) upgrade is to the home’s door knobs.  Interior doors don’t need much in terms of security, except for closing and maybe a lock, so just about any door knob will work just fine.  Vintage door handles are hot right now, and are extremely easy to find online and in antique stores.  If you like the old school look, but don’t want to spend a lot, check into vintage porcelain door knobs.  They have that cool, old style and are very affordable.

If you don’t want to go old-school with your door knobs, there are lots of creative new designs as well.  Brass is the most common material, and comes in different finishes like chrome, oil rubbed bronze, and satin.  You can get these in just about any shape you can imagine.

Another easy upgrade to a door is the hinges.  It usually takes two people to change out a door hinge, so have an extra set of hands when it’s time to do this.  You can either match the door hinges to the room that they’re in, or to the door handle, whichever makes sense for your home.  Door hinges are also very inexpensive, so you can get this job done without spending much money at all.

Take a look at the doors in your home and figure out if either of the projects outlined above will help make your home a more beautiful place to live.  Neither project is difficult or expensive, so you can get a lot done with only putting a little in.
