Some Ideas on Cabinet Renovation
January 4, 2010 by GuestPoster
Anybody who’s done a bit of research on the subject of kitchen renovation knows that this is one project that doesn’t come cheap. Arguably the biggest cash layout in kitchen renovation is spent on cabinets. While many people take a look at their old, worn out cabinets and think that they need to rip them out and replace them with new ones, there is a viable alternative. Buying new cabinets will nearly always be your most expensive option, but you should also consider just replacing the kitchen doors.
Whether or not you can replace your kitchen cupboard doors will depend on the shape your cabinets are in. If they were made of good quality, solid hardwood, there is a good chance that they are still in fine shape, even if they are ten, twenty, or even fifty years old. In reality, cabinets that were made a long time ago tended to be made by skilled craftsmen and of a higher quality than many of the cheap factory made models available today. The way to tell if this option will work for you is to take a good look at the interior of the cupboards. If the wood is still strong and intact, and not damaged by moisture or termites, then chances are you can keep your existing cabinetry in place and just replace the doors and other visible parts. Since the kitchen unit doors are the only thing people will really see, replacing just these things is a great way to save money.
Although many people are very intimidated by the thought of doing a project of this magnitude by themselves, in reality, most people can tackle a job like this with a little determination. The cost of hiring someone to do the work is amazingly expensive, so if money is tight, you should really consider trying to do the job yourself, even if it takes you ten times as long as a professional!
