It used to be that rubies were thought of as the king of gemstones and were favored by royalty and the rich of society for use in rings, necklaces, earrings and all other jewelry. The reality was that sometimes these ruby gems were actually spinels or indeed garnets but they didn’t have the expert techniques in those days to be able to tell such things apart. These days you can be sure that when you buy ruby rings that is what you are actually getting.

These days the ruby has lost a little of its prestige as most of us think of the diamond as the gem of choice and ruby is demoted to second place. Still we recognize that this gemstone stands romance and devotion, which is why so many of us still manage to choose engagement rings with ruby. Of course, the fact that is is always cheaper than a diamond might also have something to do with the fact that so many of us select it.

The fact that rubies are red makes them look bigger than they actually are and when faceted they are cut deeper than a diamond of similar size. This helps show off deep coloration in the gem. When used in rings they are cut in a number of different shapes, with round being the most popular and other basic shapes like oval, square and teardrop finding favor with some.

A ruby circled with diamonds can be used as the centerpiece to create an exceptional cocktail, or it can be used to accent other gems. The also come in a wide range of sizes depending on the style you are looking for and the amount of money you have to spend. Whether you are looking for dainty, delicate styles or a much larger rings that really stands out. You can even find designs that will look great on a man’s finger.
