Information about Pet Turtles

Owning a pet turtle can be a very rewarding experience, and a turtle is a great pet to have for your children.  However, many people do not realize that most mistreat their new pets because they have no idea how to properly care for a pet turtle.  If you want to get the most out of your new pet, and if you want him to live as long as possible (which can be a very long time-some turtles are said to live for more than two hundred years), you need to know the best turtle care.

If you plan on getting some kind of tortoise for a pet and you also have kids, then you need to know several things to keep your turtle alive and well for a long time.  Most people make a lot of mistakes when trying to take care of their new pet.  The biggest mistake one can make is constantly picking up and trying to play with your turtle.  Turtles are not like a dog or a cat, and picking them up and trying to play with them can cause a lot of harm and stress.  They are not made to be cuddling types of pets, and doing this can cause harm and sometimes even lead to death.

Feeding your pet turtle is also another big part of taking care of your new pet.  This also leads to many mistakes, and people need to do research on how to best feed their tortoise.  Just sticking a few pieces of romaine lettuce in their tank or cage is not the best way to go about getting your pet the proper nutrition it needs.  It is true that turtles do like eating greens like lettuce, but get different types of lettuce rather than iceberg, as it does not have very many nutrients.  Try getting spinach or romaine to feed to your new pet, as it is much better for them.
