Weight Loss Systems: The Many Ways to Lose Weight

November 24, 2009 by GuestPoster

The science of weight loss has been an emerging industry for the past few years. Traditional aerobics and “eat-right” habits that contribute to weight loss and physical fitness have been replaced by countless methods that include strict nutritional diets, specially-cooked meals, and even going under the surgeon’s knife for a quick nip and tuck.

Probably the most common of these weight loss systems are diets. Most people who try to lose weight usually address a major aspect of their life: eating. Diet usually involves altering eating habits that include the amount of food intake, the type of food eaten and the frequency of your meals. For instance, the Atkins diet reduces the intake of carbohydrates and is thus aptly called a low-carb diet. Some approaches to dieting revolve around a specific type of food. An example of this is the cabbage soup diet, a short-term weight loss method that requires you to eat nothing but low-calorie cabbage soup for seven days. Because dieting has been a very popular weight loss method, many companies have created businesses out of it. Among the popular ones include Momentum weigh loss, WeightWatchers, and Jenny Craig, Inc., whose celebrity clients include Kirstie Alley, Queen Latifah and Valerie Bertinelli.  Food replacement systems such as Jenny Craig cook your meals for you. While this leads to healthy eating and a healthier way to lose weight, this may burn your wallets because of the high price of their products. Health experts also insist that dieting and food replacement programs must be supplemented by physical activity or exercise. Making a habit out of exercising gives you long-term weight loss results Running or walking for 30 minutes a day is the standard prescription when it comes to exercise. However, there are also exercise routines that target specific parts of the body. Pilates and yoga, for instance, work on the flexibility of the core muscles. Weightlifting, on the other hand, takes care of muscle toning. You might need a trainer to help you get started with these exercise routines, as starting them on the wrong foot might lead to unnecessary injuries. If you can’t wait for a few months to shed those pounds, then going under the knife is the weight loss method for you. Novel surgical processes like liposuction immediately extract the excess fat and sculpt the body to your desired shape. More radical surgeries like gastric bypass and stomach stapling entail alteration of your stomach so as to control your eating.  Surgery, arguably the most expensive of weight loss methods, offers quick results and is the last resort when diet and exercise methods have failed.

While losing a few pounds is not harmful, remember to consult your doctor or nearby health expert on the best weight loss method for you. It is also important to pair weight loss with a positive self-image and healthy attitude to diet and exercise.
