When Should You Purchase a New Mattress?

Chances are that if you’re reading this article you’re thinking of replacing your worn out mattress with a new mattress. While there may be some obvious signs that you need to replace your current mattress, there are some basic criteria that will help you make the decision a lot easier. The last thing you want to do is hold on to your tired old mattress. You deserve a comfortable night of sleep so that you can face the day ahead feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

Before doing anything else, you should figure out the age of the current mattress you’re sleeping on. Typically, a traditional spring and coil mattress will last anywhere from 7 to 10 years, so if you’re beyond this point, chances are good that you need a replacement. Even if your 10 year old mattress still feels comfortable, it’s likely that there are a host of dust mites, mold and bacteria thriving on the surface and within the mattress itself. Of course, you don’t see any of these problems, but trust me, they are there.

The first thing most people will notice in an old mattress is the formation of dips and depressions, which will consequently bring your body closer to the internal springs and coils. If you feel springs poking you in the back, you need to be looking for a new mattress. Ideally, a mattress should not create pressure points, but should yield gently to your body.

When shopping for new mattresses, longevity is an important consideration. While purchasing a comfortable mattress is important, you don’t want to buy something that will need to be replaced a few years down the line. Fortunately, there are variety of mattresses, including those made from memory foam and latex that can last 15 to 20 years. Be sure to look for a high quality mattress, and one that has some positive user reviews behind it. It’s also important to shop only at reputable mattress retailers, where you can speak to low-pressure sales personnel. If you think you might need a new mattress, box spring or even a double divan bed then don’t hesitate. Do the proper research, read the reviews, and buy with confidence.
